Number of Keywords on a Webpage for SEO
by NicholasHalmond

Most people know that one of the keys to utilizing SEO and ranking your website in the search engines is the use of keywords. Still, there are many factors you must consider when using keywords if you want to see success. One of the elements that some people get focused is how many keywords they should target on one webpage.

Most of us performing SEO work tend to want to take things too far. In other words, we get ahead of ourselves and try to everything we can as quickly as possible. With this thinking, people sometimes jam 10 keywords onto a single web page, hoping that they will rank highly for all of them. However, this is not the way it works any longer and too many keywords can damage your rankings.

There was a time over a decade or more ago when the use of keywords was first gaining importance where the more you used, the more you ranked for. At this time nobody really knew anything about SEO and how it really worked, and the search engines themselves were still developing their formulas for how to produce high quality rankings.

Today, many people practicing SEO try to target too many keywords on a single webpage. They figure, if I have 25 figures I'm trying to rank for, I should try to make every one of my web pages get ranked for all of those keywords. It's like playing the percentages, giving yourself more options and therefore ensuring that you'll see great results.

Therefore a more effective strategy is to follow the motto that less is more for SEO. Instead of trying to jam every keyword you have on a single page, you should be using far less and spreading them out around different pages of your site, improving each page's positioning for certain phrases or topics.

Now that you know that less is more, what's the answer for how many keywords should be on a single page for maximum SEO success? There is no guaranteed answer that is going to ensure you a perfect mix, however targeting 2 or 3 keywords on a single web page is usually the best idea. For pages with less content you'll want to reduce that to 1-2 keywords, and for pages with a great deal of content you can target a few more.

Of course, this number is just a basic guideline. For pages with lots of content, you can include more than 2 different keywords as a prime focus. However, for a page with just one hundred words, targeting 2 to 3 different key phrases would be excessive.

SEO has evolved a great deal over the last decade. You can't try to rank every single web page on your website for every single keyword that you're targeting. Instead, break up your keyword list and focus on 2 or maybe 3 keywords on a single page in order to maximize your success in the search engines.
